History of Kayakoy Fethiye

Kayaköy is ideally situated close to the famous Blue Lagoon for your Fethiye vacation. Greek immigrants developed the village as a Greek Orthodox community in the 18th century. When it was at its busiest, Levissi, a busy neighborhood with its own school, church, and stores, was home to over 10,000 people. The Treaty of Lausanne, which was signed in 1923, however, included a citizenship swap between Greece and Turkey. Greeks in Kayaköy were compelled to abandon their homes as a consequence.

The Village in Abandonment

The village was abandoned after the Greeks departed, and it stayed that way for a long time. The homes and structures were allowed to deteriorate, and the village eventually turned into a ghost town. People travel from all over the world to Kayaköy, a well-known tourism destination, to see the long-abandoned hamlet and learn about its history.

Many of the abandoned homes and buildings in Kayaköy are still standing today, and visitors can tour them. The Church of Panagia Pyrgiotissa, one of the best-preserved churches in the region, is one of the many churches in the hamlet. The cathedral, which was built in the seventeenth century, has beautiful frescoes and elaborate carvings.

The Museum of the Exchange, which chronicles the history of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, is yet another must-see site in Kayaköy. In addition to exhibits, pictures, and first-person accounts from those who were impacted by the exchange, the museum is located in a restored home.
